Visvesvaraya Canal Farm popularly known as “V.C. Farm”, was established in the year 1931, initially as a Sugarcane Research Station during the regime of Maharaja of Mysore, erstwhile Sri. NaalwadiKrishnarajaWadeyar. At present, the campus comprises teaching (College of Agriculture), research (Zonal Agriculture Research Station) and extension (KrishiVigyan Kendra) wings under University of agricultural Sciences, Mandya. The normal rainfall received is 737 mm annually and comes under Southern Dry Zone of Karnataka (Zone-VI). However, it has regular source of canal irrigation from Krishnarajasagara dam built across Cauvery River. The campus is about 10 km away from Mandya city and has good road connectivity situating beside Mandya – Melukote state highway.
The Government of Karnataka accorded sanction for the start of College of Agriculture at V.C. Farm, Mandya vide Government order No. AHD 274 AUM 89 dated 20.06.1991. Accordingly, a committee was constituted comprising officers of the Department of Agriculture represented by Mr. Siddegowda, Joint Director of Agriculture, Mysore and Mr. Srikantaiah, Deputy Director of Agriculture, Mandya and members from the University of Agricultural Sciences represented by Dr. G.K. Veeresh, Director of Instruction (Agri.), College of Agriculture, UAS, Bangalore, Sri. S. Ramaswamy, Estate Officer, UAS, Bangalore and Dr. Puttaswamy, Associate Director of Research, RRS, Mandya. The members of the committee reviewed availability of resources and infrastructures for the feasibility of starting College of Agriculture and accorded their recommendation on 12.07.1991. In pursuance of the approval by the 219th Board of Regents, UAS (B), the college foundation was laid on 15th September, 1991 to commemorate the birth anniversary of BharataRathna Sir. M. Visvesvaraya.
